Now that you have updated to iPhone 3.0 (doesn’t matter what model of the actual phone) you can now use it as a modem for your desktop computer or laptop using your phone carrier’s data plan. This is called tethering. For some it means FREE INTERNETZ for some it means OMGZ EXPENZIVE BILLZ.

Note: if you have jailbroken and unlocked your phone to use with another carrier, you might want to read this guide instead: Complete How-to: Tethering an iPhone with 3.0 firmware.

Now let’s start. Make sure that your iPhone has Bluetooth turned on. On the phone, go to “Preferences” and select “General”, “Bluetooth”. Turn it on. You should have it off any time you’re not using it, because it eats your batteries. Yum yum.

Select the Bluetooth menu item from the menu bar:

If you haven’t already, choose “Set up Bluetooth Device”
    bluetooth: setup new device

In the new window, wait a few seconds until your deivce shows up in the list. Select it and click “Continue”.

In a few seconds this will show up as well as a question on the screen of your iPhone: “[computer name] would like to pair with your iPhone.” Choose “Pair” on the iPhone and “Continue” on the computer.

    Now they are paired.
